COMMUNICATIONS & DOCUMENTATION CENTRE

INTRODUCTION

Communication is one of the cornerstones of the Christian faith.  Without it, the mission of the Church will seriously fail.  Church leaders essentially need to have enthusiasm for good communication both within and outside the Church.  Our focus in communication has been and will continue to be building and strengthening the Church by enabling greater understanding through information sharing.  We attempt to help the Church understand and interpret the environment within which she finds her mission such as increasing world debt and related poverty etc.

Communication is about people and life.  It does not operate in a vacuum.  A medium of communication is the nerve – centre of any organization.

The Communications Centre under the umbrella of the Anglican Church of Kenya came into being in 1986 and has been in operation since then.  It is the testimony of the attempt by the Church to go and tell… the good news of Christ’s work using both traditional and modern symbols of communication.  In its efforts to go and tell the good news, the Centre breaks ranks with traditional mass media news values.  It is testimony to the fact that the alternative voice can be the voice of hope and reason.

The Church in Kenya today remains the voice of reason, the voice of human concern and the voice of the conscience of society.  Her strength lies in her laity living in the country’s rural areas and to whom she has to act as an animator and guide in promoting unity and harmony through collaboration with other people of good will.

OUR OBJECTIVES

1. To enable the Church understand the critical issues affecting society and seek a point of intervention to promote dialogue within the social context.
2. To enable the Church look within itself and develop and maintain proper relationships all round thus taking the Church to the people rather than waiting for them to come to Church.
3. To capture and encourage creativity and renewal in worship and help local congregations identify common interests with other Churches to enhance greater cooperation.
4. To help the Church share success stories and unsuccessful attempts at mission.
5. To help the Church understand and fully use modern technology in evangelism because the Church is living in times of great technological and social change.
6. To help the Church empower and equip the laity for mission by initiating dialogue on all issues in the social context.

The programs initiated to facilitate these objectives are:
THE CHRISTIAN VOICE MAGAZINE
In the discharge of her prophetic role, the Church needs to constantly interact and speak to the society.  We intervene by publishing The Christian Voice magazine to inform and encourage citizen participation in the social set-up to build a better society.  The magazine articulates the view of the Church, clearly and concisely on social action, discipleship and renewal in the Christian faith
ELECTRONIC MEDIA
Producing audio talks on key issues forms an important part of beginning dialogue particularly in workshops and small group meetings.  We also use video to share experiences of the Church in different parts of the world.  We attempt to document on video, the experiences of the Kenyan Church and people
RESEARCH AND DOCUMENTATION
By researching and documenting various issues of public interest, we hope to develop enough ground to tackle the root causes of these social evils
We use the knowledge gained to empower and develop grassroots communications through training programs for awareness creation, networking, and to raise up writers for both Church and secular media
