ACK Diocese of Kirinyaga
ACK Diocese of Kirinyag
The Diocese of Kirinyaga was created on the 1st of July 1990 by the division of the former Diocese of Mount Kenya East. The Most. Rev. David Gitari became the first Bishop of the Diocese in 1991 and served until 1997 after which he became the Archbishop of The Anglican Church of Kenya. The Rt. Rev. Andrew Adano Tuve was consecrated Assistant Bishop in July, 1993. The Rt. Rev. Daniel Munene Ngoru was enthroned as the 2nd Bishop in 1997 and served to his retirement in 2012. He was then replaced by The Rt. Rev. Joseph Karimi Kibucwa who was enthroned as the 3rd Bishop of the Diocese on the 9th of December 2012.
Initially, the diocese served the present Dioceses of Meru and Marsabit, which were later curved out in 1997 and 2008 respectively. The original mission site of Kabare now houses the Kabare Theological and Development College. This institution, under different titles, has for a long time provided training in mission, evangelism, secretarial work and accountancy which has strengthened the work of the churches in many Dioceses.
Currently, the diocese has eight Archdeaconries, twenty-seven deaneries, one hundred and fifteen parishes, two hundred and twenty-nine congregations and over 145,000 Christians. Its headquarters are at Kutus, Kirinyaga County.
