ACK Diocese of Maseno South
ACK Diocese of Maseno South
The Diocese of Maseno South was formed by the division of the Diocese of Maseno in 1970. The first Bishop was the Rt. Rev. Evan Agola, previously Assistant Bishop of Maseno, who was installed on 26 April, 1970. The previous offices and pro-cathedral of the Diocese of Maseno continued to be used. After the retirement of Bishop Agola, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Henry Okullu was consecrated to the Diocese on 24 February 1974. Dr. Okullu had previously been Provost of All Saints’ Cathedral Nairobi and editor of Target newspaper, an NCCK production. Much of his training and pastoral experience had been in Uganda. With the ordination of the Rev. Lucia Okudhe in 1981 as a priest the Diocese became a pioneer in advocating the ordination of women in Kenya. It also pioneered development projects and income generation in other Dioceses. The Diocese was divided with the creation of the Diocese of Maseno West in 1985 and again, with the creation of the Diocese of Southern Nyanza in 1993. Following the retirement of Bishop Okullu, Rt. Rev. Francis Mwayi Abiero was consecrated Bishop of Maseno South on 11 September, 1994. He retired in 2018 and was succeeded by the Rt. Rev. Charles Ochieng Ongi’njo.
