ACK Diocese of Mount Kenya South
This Diocese was formed out of the subdivision of the Diocese of Mount Kenya in 1975, with its headquarters in Kiambu. The Rt. Rev. Obadiah Kariuki was its first Bishop. He retired in 1976 and was succeeded by the Rt. Rev. Sospeter Magua, who was consecrated on 31 October 1976. The Rt. Rev. Eshbon Ngaruiya moved with Bishop Kariuki to remain his Assistant Bishop and continued to serve in this capacity under Bishop Magua.
After the tragic death of Bishop and Mrs. Magua in a road accident the same year, the Rt. Rev. George Njuguna became Bishop until 1996. He was succeeded by the Rt. Rev. Peter Njenga who served until his retirement in 2004. The Rt. Rev. Timothy Ranji took over and he is the current presiding Bishop. He is assisted by The Rt. Rev. Charles Mugane Muturi. The duo was consecrated on 18th July 2004 and 31st October 2010 respectively. In 1998, the Diocese was subdivided to create the diocese of Thika.
This densely populated Diocese started with nearly two million, people, of whom about 203,000 were Anglicans. There were initially 64 clergy, 50 parishes and 300 congregations, 97 paid evangelists and 181 lay readers. Expansion has continued, but within a smaller area since Mount Kenya Central Diocese was formed in 1984. The diocese has 12 Archdeaconries.
