ACK Diocese of Nairobi

The Diocese of Nairobi was created in 1964. The earlier part of its history coincided with that of the Diocese of Mombasa. The Most Rev. L.J. Beecher, Archbishop of the Province of East Africa, who had previously been Bishop of Mombasa, became its first Bishop. Archbishop Beecher retired in 1970 with the inauguration of the separate Provinces of Kenya and Tanzania. The Most Rev. Festo Olang’ became Bishop of Nairobi as well as Archbishop of the Province of Kenya as provided for in the CPK Constitution. He was enthroned at All Saints’ Cathedral on 31 August 1970.

The Rt. Rev. Crispus Nzano became Assistant Bishop of Nairobi on his consecration on 23 February 1975 but moved to Mombasa in 1980. After Archbishop Olang’s retirement in 1979 the Most Rev. Manasses Kuria succeeded him as Archbishop of the Province and the Bishop of Nairobi. In 1994, the most Rev. Dr. Manasses Kuria retired and in 1996 The Most Rev. Dr. David Gitari was elected the third Archbishop of the province of Kenya. In September 2002 Nairobi Diocese was split to create the All Saints Cathedral diocese which was the Archbishop’s Diocese- The Most Rev. David Gitari became the Head of the All Saints. Cathedral Diocese while The Rt. Rev. Peter Njoka was elected the first Bishop of Nairobi Diocese. In July 2010, Bishop Peter Njoka retired and he was succeeded by The Rt. Rev. Joel Waweru who was consecrated on the 5th of September 2010. Bishop Joel Waweru retired on 4th of October, 2024.  Currently, it is served by 11 Archdeaconries.

Nairobi Diocese was split to create the Dioceses of Machakos (1985), Diocese of Kajiado (1993) and the All. Saints’ Cathedral (2002)
