The Ven. Canon Gerald Mwangi Muriithi has been elected to become the 3rd Bishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Diocese of Mt. Kenya West. The elections took place on Saturday 8th February 2025 at the ACK St Peters’ Cathedral, Nyeri.
Born in 1969, Rev. Canon Muriithi has dedicated his life to ministry, pastoral care and community development for over 22 years. He has served in various capacities within the church and has made a significant impact through his leadership and ministry. He is married and blessed with a family.
Ven. Canon Muriithi was ordained as a Priest on 10th March 2002 in the ACK Diocese of Mt. Kenya West. He was collated as Canon on 27th October 2012, and assigned the stall of St. James in the ACK Cathedral of St. Peters.
Rev. Canon Muriithi holds a Master’s in Project Training and Management (University of Nairobi, 2019), Bachelor of Divinity (St. Paul’s University, 2001), a Guidance & Counselling Certificate – (University of Nairobi, 2004), Animal Health Assistant Certificate (A.H.I.T.I Nyahururu 1990), KCSE Certificate (Othaya Boys High School 1987).
The Bishop-elect has served as Parish Priest in various Parishes within the Diocese and Diocesan Administrative Officer and Education Officer, providing guidance and counseling in Schools and overseeing Diocesan Administrative Secretary. He has also held positions in the governance structures of various Community – Based Organizations and Programs
He will be consecrated and enthroned as Bishop of Mt. Kenya West on the 23rd of March 2025, at St. Peters Cathedral in Nyeri County.
He will take over from Retired Bishop Joseph Kagunda.
The Diocese of Mount Kenya West was established in 1993, carved out from the Diocese of Mount Kenya Central. The inaugural bishop, Rt. Rev. Alfred Charles Chipman, was consecrated and enthroned at St. Peter’s Church on July 4, 1993, by Archbishop Manasses Kuria. Bishop Chipman chose St. Peter’s as the cathedral for the new diocese, which also housed the diocesan offices. Following Bishop Chipman’s tenure, Rt. Rev. Joseph Kagunda assumed leadership of the diocese. Bishop Kagunda retired on April 14, 2024
